Star Wars: The Force Awakens is now the highest grossing domestic film of all time, surpassing Avatar, the previous record-holder, in less than a month.  Avatar, released in 2009, domestically grossed $760 million in its seven-month theater run. Internationally, the move earned $2.78 billion, leaving Star Wars trailing behind.

Episode VII of the popular franchise has earned $1.58 billion internationally, but is releasing in China and other countries in the coming month.

Many analysts are questioning whether Star Wars will be able to surpass Avatar internationally, but undoubtedly, Star Wars has set many more records, including biggest Christmas Day, biggest New Years, and highest location average.

The next episode of the franchise is slated for a 2017 release with spinoffs in between.
