Staten Island man Eric Garner was strangled to death by NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo in an altercation with multiple police officers July 17 where he was accused of selling “loosies,” or single cigarettes without tax, which is illegal.  A grand jury decided to not indict Pantaleo.

The death of Eric Garner was filmed by witness Ramsey Orta (NSFW).  Garner is seen in the video being strangled by Pantaleo, saying “I can’t breathe,” multiple times.

Though the grand jury did not indict Pantaleo, Orta was indicted on single felony counts of third degree criminal weapon possession and criminal firearm possession.  Orta had fought this charge, claiming the charges were false and made in retaliation to him filming Garner’s death.

Protests broke out in New York.  These overnight protests resulted in 223 arrests.

President Obama addressed Eric Garner and touched on acquittal of the police officer who shot Mike Brown, an unarmed black man.

“We are not going to let up until we see a strengthening of the trust and a strengthening of the accountability that exists between our communities and our law enforcement,” Obama said.  “This is an American problem and not just a black problem or a brown problem.”
