Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) announced his presidential bid for the 2016 election at Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA on Monday.

Cruz was the first candidate to officially announce his campaign in the 2016 election.  Others have been rumored to be running, such as Jeb Bush (R), and Hillary Clinton (D).

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

“It is a time for liberty,” Cruz said.  “It is a time to reclaim the Constitution of the United States.”

Cruz will be the republican candidate who hopes to bring more Tea Party influence into his politics and republican candidacy.

“What is the promise of America,”  Cruz said.  “The idea that… this country was founded upon, that our rights don’t come from man; they come from God Almighty.”

The theme of Cruz’s speech (read the full transcript here) was for Americans to imagine what his presidency would be like.  Among the thoughts Cruz asked the audience to imagine dealt with Iran not acquiring nuclear weapons, taxes

“Imagine abolishing the IRS,” Cruz said.  “Imagine a president who stands unapologetically with the nation of Israel.  Imagine a federal government that works to defend the sanctity of human life and to uphold the sacrament of marriage.”

Cruz also might be obtaining healthcare through the Affordable Care Act through a federally mandated exchange.  He was previously covered under his wife’s insurance, however she will be taking unpaid leave from Goldman Sachs, her employer, and will no longer be covered.

“Imagine in 2017, a new president signing legislation repealing every word of Obamacare,” Cruz said.  “Imagine health care reform that keeps government out of the way between you and your doctor and that makes health insurance personal and portable and affordable.”

Cruz wrapped up his speech asking people of faith and lovers of liberty who respect the Constitution to come out on Election Day and vote for him.

“This is our fight,” Cruz said.  “It will only come from the men and women across this country, from men and women, from people of faith, from lovers of liberty, from people who respect the Constitution.”

He stated that he hopes to restore the United States.

“We will get back and restore that shining city on a hill that is the United States of America,” Cruz said.  “Thank you and God bless you.”
